27th January 2023 at Toyota Test Track in Eston, Durban. Testing undertaken of a sudden deflation on a commercial vehicle (Iveco S-Way 470 – 20223 model Truck tractor) steer wheel at 40 km/h.
The initial sudden deflation was undertaken in 2014 on a minibus taxi, at one of our previous test days. Following this, we have had countless sudden deflation cases, particularly on commercial vehicles. We have done extensive research and reading on this issue, and noted that there is little to no actual real world testing undertaken on an actual street wheel sudden deflation, hence the idea to do this originated in 2014, however I started setting this up in 2019, but due to various delays, primarily getting access to a commercial vehicle to use and then COVID, this had been heavily delayed. We wanted to determine, AND PUBLISH, what forces are generated at the wheel (tie rod end), and in sequence, what force that translates to through the steering system at the steering wheel, that the driver has to deal with.
